PRESS RELEASE

Government of India to import Pigeon Peas (Tur) and Urad under

“Free Category” (OGL) till March 31, 2025

The High Commission of India in Maputo avails of this opportunity to inform all exporters of Pigeon Peas – Tur Dal – from Mozambique to India that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distributions of the Government of India has emphatically clarified that India has extended import of Tur Dal (Pigeon Peas) and Urad Dal under “Free Category” (OGL) till March 31, 2025.

The import of the aforesaid Tur Dal will be done by Government of India freely without any restriction on quantity or those enshrined in the modalities for import of the same under the bilateral MoU between India and Mozambique. The exporters of Tur Dal from Mozambique can now export it without any upper limit till March 31, 2025. Further, there is no import duty on export of Tur Dal (Pigeon Peas) from Mozambique to India.

The High Commission of the Republic of India in Maputo further wishes to re-emphasize that the MoU quota for assured minimum purchase of 200,000 MT of Pigeon Peas by Government of India from Mozambique that was renewed in November 2020 has no relevance under the free import policy regime for Pigeon Peas by India till March 31, 2025. Government of India has also removed the import duty of 10% on Pigeon Peas with effect from March 3, 2023 in order to avoid the procedural hurdle created by the need for importers to produce Country of Origin Certificate to avail of the Duty Free Preferential Treatment (DFPT) Scheme.
